Reviews Write Your Own or View All 1 ReviewsMarvel Superheroes + Some of Capcom's Finest = Awesomeness! After the amazing success of Street Fighter 2, Capcom set out to create as many awesome fighting games as possible. Numerous remakes of Street Fighter 2 as well as a sequal, Street Fighter III (and its remakes), were made but it wasn't long before Capcom starting pulling in new challengers from some of it's more obscure titles (like Darkstalkers) and even other universes. Thus began the "vs." series which includes SNK vs. Capcom, X-Men: Children of the Atom (an all X-men brawler), and of course Marvel vs. Capcom. Story: The only hint of story or plot of some kind comes at the end of the game when your character either defeats or helps defeat Onslaught, the game's final boss, or something related to that. It's pretty weak, but such is the stigma when it comes to fighting games. It's still pretty cool to see the Marvel and Capcom character juxtaposed together, even though it's short. Gameplay: The street fighter engine with some improvements and additions. The analog stick or d-pad are used to move back and forth (this is a 2D fighter), duck, and jump; the face buttons control punches and kicks (button combination creates combos and special attacks); and the shoulder buttons (the Rs and Ls) can be mapped with different button sequences of your choosing. The setup is a little different than the arcade version as you can only control one hero and either use a second hero for double hyper combos or an assist character. One-on-One multiplayer matches are present thankfully. Presentation: Although almost a decade old, Marvel vs. Capcom still looks and sounds good. There are plenty of convincing sound effects and each stage has a unique track and each character a unique theme; there are a few that stand out but otherwise they're not that noteworthy. The graphics on the other hand are great all around: Characters look great, are easily recognizable, and animate almost flawlessly; it's pure old skool eye-candy. Marvel vs. Capcom is one of the PS1's finest should definitely be in your library if you love fighting games. Hints and Tips |
