LOTR: ROTK is a third-person action game where you follow the story of the movies of the same title, fighting evil and saving the day. Fans will love the environments that attempt to recreate the Middle Earth introduced by JRR Tolkien's novels, as well as appreciate the number of playable characters. Unfortunately, from the on-set of having to watch a 5-minute plus "intro video," composed entirely of clips from the movies, without being able to skip it until you have a save file, you find yourself trapped in a very derivative world. The graphics in the game are decent, not ground-breaking by any means, but they do a fine job of portraying the characters and locales. The sound is pretty good, with appropriate voice acting and clanging of sharp steel. Sadly for anyone but the biggest of LOTR fans, the downfall of this game is...the gameplay. After about the first 5 minutes, you'll realize the best way to defend Middle Earth is not by deftly using Legolas' arrows, Aragorn's sword, or even using the parry button or wicked-cool combos. Instead, simply pounding the standard attack button lays waste to any foe who dares get in your way, unless they are shielded, whereas one "strong attack" breaks that barrier and allows the most powerful onslaught of weak attacks ever seen to continue. It's too bad this wasn't overlooked, as the numerous combos and special abilities really wind up only being used to get your "special" meter full to earn more points. At the end of the day, you'll realize you should have spent a lot less time playing this game, and perhaps read a few of the books. On a positive note, this is the third and final chapter to this series of games, bringing it to a nice, loosely folded package of mediocrity.
