GREAT GREAT GREAT Multiplayer.

Reviewed by jkat on September 03, 2006  |  report this review

While the single player in this game truly rocks, the Multiplayer is where it shines. 4 of us have a DS at work and 2 poeple picked theirs up simply because of how much fun we have playing Balloon battle during lunch/breaks. Its so fun and after a while you start to get really tactical and implenting some of your own rules (like No forward shooting Red shells - with this rule adds a whole new twist to the game and makes it 10x more fun).

Some argue that this is why the internet was invented. They could be right------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Ever since multiplayer gaming left the living room and launched itself onto the internet, there have been people hoping to take Mario Kart, one of the greatest party series of all time, along for the ride. It's been a long wait, but the mustachioed plumber is finally playing with millions of others in cyberspace. We've come to expect the dirt-spitting, powered-up racing and heavily themed courses with each version, so this time it's the online perks that will force your hard-earned money into the register.

Nintendo's Wi-Fi Connection allows up to four people to race online, and as far as straight gameplay is concerned, this kart ride is a smooth as they come. The same frenzied, off-the-wall competition that makes every lap a constant back-and-forth battle is carried onto the net in excellent form. With the usual complement of outlandish power-ups, including turtle shells, banana peels and item-stealing ghosts, no victory is ever assured and no lead is guaranteed. It's typical to see a room full of friends turn rowdy because some jerkhole in last place keeps frying everyone with lightning bolts.

Pros:

Great Graphics!
WiFi
Online accually challenging!
Lots to unlock
Lots of Fun

Cons:

There was no Koopa! ;)

Graphics: 9/5/10... Crisp, clean, and beautiful on the DS.
Sound: 9/10
Gameplay: 9.75/10... Can't get much better than Mariokart! But Nintendo did it by adding WiFi.

Overal: 9.75/10

If you have a DS and a WiFi compatible router and internet, you MUST get this game.

If you like racing games and mario, then this is the perfect game for you. Though not as great as mario kart double dash for the gamecube, it is great for long car rides. Along the way you unlock new characters and each character has their own advantages and disadvantages. I wasn't able to stop playing until I beat the last level in 150cc mirror mode (the last cup).

The different scenarios you’re put in in the “Quest” (forgot what it’s called) and the online is very nice. I don’t like the friendcodes though... The characters you’re able to play as has a big variety and it’s fun how they can use the vehicles other riders can. It’s a really fun game, and if you don’t have it, you should get it.

The best game on the Nintendo DS

Reviewed by kngzmexican on September 27, 2007  |  report this review

you've ever been the proud owner of a Nintendo system, or have at least befriended somebody with one, odds are you've encountered a Mario Kart game at some point. The popular racing series, which first appeared on the Super Nintendo in 1992, lets you race your favorite Nintendo characters against each other in karts that can be armed with such devastating weapons as banana peels, opponent-seeking red shells, and opponent-shrinking lightning bolts. The series has evolved steadily with each iteration, up to and including 2003's Mario Kart: Double Dash, which retained most of its predecessors' features while introducing a new team-based mechanic that saw each cart manned by both a driver and a gunner. Mario Kart DS, then, might seem like something of a step back for the series in that it more closely resembles the Super Nintendo and Nintendo 64 games than the GameCube version; but, as the first game in the series to boast integrated online play, it also represents a major step forward.

Like previous Mario Kart games, Mario Kart DS features a number of single-player grand prix competitions that comprise four races each. Mario Kart DS includes a total of eight grand prix competitions for a total of 32 different races, many of which aren't available until you beat those that you can select from the outset. Four of the grand prix (or 16 of the races, in other words) are all-new, while the remaining four are composed entirely of classic circuits taken from the SNES, N64, GameCube, and GBA iterations of Mario Kart. The tracks include everything from simplistic figure-eight circuits and beach courses to street races that task you with avoiding traffic and racing around a giant pinball table. Grand Prix competitions can be contested in 50cc, 100cc, and 150cc classes, and as you progress through them you'll notice an increase not only in speed, but also in the aggression of your opponents.

Before you do any of that, of course, you'll have to decide which of your favorite Nintendo characters you want to race as. There are eight characters with two karts each available the first time you play, but as you progress you'll unlock lots more. When selecting your racer, there are a number of different factors that you'll want to take into consideration--the speed and acceleration of your kart are the most obvious, but you'll also want to bear in mind your weight, handling, and drift attributes, because the differences between the various karts are quite noticeable once you take them out on the circuit. The final attribute that you might want to take note of is "items," which has a significant bearing on the quality of the power-ups that you receive during the course of a race. If you choose a character with a very low items score, for example, you're very often unlikely to get your hands on a blue spiky shell (it never fails to take out the race leader) or the new Bullet Bill power-up (which temporarily transforms you into a Bullet Bill and flies you past opp

this game is good for anyone... i mean anyone. there are only a fue things that are flawed and you dont find games like that often. for example some games are flawed with not enough fun and other are flawed with being too short or almost no replay value. this game is just right... even if you unlocked everything, it can still keep you bussy for a long while, unlike most of the pokemon games (once you have a level 90-100 pokemon there is just no point in useing it anymore). if you play double dash the drifting in this is a slight slower so you hoave to start plenty early (probably because you have to jump before you get to turn)
