Don't use the onion 'till the end.

Towards the end of the game, all the characters are at pretty high levels and so they are harder and it takes longer to level them up, but to earn new abilities, you have to level them up right? Well, the onion technically never has to be in your party to continue with the story line, so just let him chill elsewhere until towards the end - then bust him out and earn all the really cool abilities!
